The Senior Engineer is responsible for conceptualizing, coordinating and executing projects. The incumbent is required to work independently to plan and carry out projects that require the application of advanced technical knowledge and engineering experience. Senior engineers are expected to direct, guide and review the work of subordinates.

The specific responsibilities of the Senior Engineer/Designer include, but are not limited to the following outlined areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for the design of structural systems, working out SD and DD options.
• Reviews status of checklists and standard letters as projects progress.
• Determines software selection. • Regularly consults with and oversees work of Junior and Intermediate Engineers, including checking designs and markups for code and office standards compliance.
• Prepares questionnaire and coordination of Specification documents.
• Responsible for markup and coordination of project documentation.
• Writes and coordinates structural Specifications and Terms of References without assistance.
• Coordinates non-structural Specifications as they pertain to structural matters with other disciplines as required.
• Develops project “work packages.”
• Manages the design process and provides deliverables within own control on time and within budget.
• Reviews budget/profitability with Project Principal.
• Determines what work could be classified as “extra services” and pursues related compensation.
• Assists in the training of junior staff.
• Communicates directly and regularly with clients and may manage client meetings.
• Organizes internal team meetings.
• Attends kickoff meeting with Contract Administrator.
• Brings forward any potential new work.
• Produces correspondence, reports, and fee letters independently.
• May be involved in technical, management, social and other company issues.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Science, or equivalent. A Master’s Degree in Engineering or Business Administration would be considered an asset.

Accreditation: Licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of related practical working experience from graduation.

Skills Required (General):

Excellent understanding of engineering procedures and standards, complemented by a strong understanding of organizational objectives and standards; effective application of training principles; strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to motivate technical staff; effective communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills; a proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-oriented environment.

Skills Required (Specific):

Has a solid understanding of the delivery types and their implications on the design process. Understands the design time requirements corresponding to the various delivery types. Has significant site experience and contract administration exposure in all building types, materials and delivery methods.
